Patrick Stewart who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the XMEN trilogy survived Domestic Violence as a child.  He said in an interview with Amnesty International in June 2006 ”I experienced first hand violence against my mother...Great harm was done by those events-and of course I mean the physical scars that were left, the blood that was spilled, the wounds that were exposed-but there were also other aspects of violence which have a lasting impact…” Patrick is recognising the mental and emotional pain that he, his Mum and brothers experienced. He stated that: “It's taken me a long time to be able to speak about what happened”. Patrick and his brothers have decided to speak out about what happened to them to help stop violence towards women and children from men.
